Dealing with symptoms and side effects

Prostate cancer and pain

Prostate cancer and its treatments can cause pain. Pain from prostate cancer usually only occurs in men with advanced prostate cancer. This most commonly happens when the disease spreads to the bones.

Treatments for prostate cancer such as radical prostatectomy and external beam radiotherapy can also sometimes cause pain and discomfort. This pain usually gets better once treatment has finished.

Assessing pain

Your doctor or nurse may ask to asses your level of pain, this will help them determine how best to help you. You might be asked a number of questions:

You may also be asked to keep a regular diary describing your changes in pain. Part of this will involve estimating your pain on a scale like the one below:

Managing pain

There are many different treatments available to help you manage your pain. Which one is best for you will depend upon the severity of the pain, your general health and the cause.
