Grading and staging prostate cancer

Finding out the grade and stage of prostate cancer is an important part of diagnosis. Doing so will help your doctor decide the type of treatment, if any, you may receive.

Grading prostate cancer

By taking prostate cancer cells during a biopsy and describing what they look like under a microscope, doctors can tell how quickly the cancer may grow. The cells are graded using a scale called The Gleason grading system.

Gleason grades range from 1 to 5:

Gleason grades 1 and 2 are no longer used, so your prostate cancer will be assigned a Gleason grade between 3 and 5.

Gleason score

The Gleason grading system is used to find out the Gleason score. The Gleason score gives the likelihood of the prostate cancer growing and spreading.

You can work out the Gleason score by adding together the two most common cell grades found from a biopsy. For example:
