Injection-site reactions

Skin reactions at the site of the injection are common, affecting around 1 in 10 people. These include:

  • Skin hardening
  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Abscesses
  • Swelling
  • Nodules
  • Ulcers
  • Skin damage

Flare-ups

When starting Prostap DCS, you may experience a ‘flare-up’ of tumour symptoms, such as bone pain or difficulty urinating. This is common to all LHRH agonist treatments and normally lasts for a few weeks.

In order to reduce the risk of a flare-up, an anti-androgen may be administered 3 days prior to Prostap DCS therapy and continued for the first 2-3 weeks of treatment.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Prostap DCS can cause some side effects in some people. Remember that prostate cancer itself may be causing some unpleasant symptoms, particularly pain and problems with urination.

The most common side effects of Prostap DCS occur because it lowers testosterone and include:

  • Weight changes
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Headaches
  • Hot flushes

A full list of possible side effects of Prostap DCS can be found here. However, if you experience any side effects talk to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist. Please don’t skip an injection.

Managing side effects

Should you experience any symptoms or side effects from prostate cancer or your treatment, there are a number of ways you can manage them. For a start, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight matters because it will help you stay as healthy as possible.

There is a wealth of useful advice here, including tips on how to manage:
