Monitoring prostate cancer

Once prescribed Prostap DCS your treatment team will keep a close eye on you. You will have regular blood tests to check if your prostate cancer is growing, shrinking or staying the same.

The healthcare team involved in monitoring you will include:

  • Urology consultant – who specialises in disease of the prostate and its treatment
  • Oncology consultant – who specialises in treating many types of cancer
  • Specialist nurse – who will coordinate your care and acts as a day-to-day contact

Prostate specific antigen (PSA)

Your regular blood tests will measure the level of a protein called prostate specific antigen. PSA is a protein made by both normal and cancerous prostate cells.

Following Prostap DCS treatment the level of PSA in your blood should stay stable or go down. This normally indicates that the therapy is working.

If PSA levels rise, this may mean an underlying change. Your doctor may want to perform further tests or examinations and may discuss possible changes to your treatment.
